Exam success with Dyke House 6th form students performing well in their A level and vocational qualifications

For the first time since the start of their educational journey, Dyke House Academy students in Hartlepool were able to sit external examinations and assessments, following the 2-year long disruptions created by the COVID pandemic. Thursday 18th August was a day of nerves and excitement felt by both students picking up their results, and staff who have guided and helped students in preparation for this day. Our students received great results, with the majority achieving grades required to allow them to access their first choice university placement, a number of whom have achieved top grades. A higher than average number of students will also progress onto Russell Group universities.

Charlie Angus who achieved 1 A* 1 B and 1 Distinction* said “I am absolutely buzzing with my results and pleasantly surprised. I remember being tearful after every exam, so to see grades like this, I’m so over the moon!” Charlie will be staying at Dyke House to complete her Biology A level, before moving on to study Speech and Language Therapy at Newcastle University. “I would really love to be a Speech and Language therapist. English Language is my favourite subject and being able to help people in this format is something that I’ve been wanting to do for years” said Charlie.
Chris Watson who achieved 3 As said “I am very pleased with all of my results, particularly English! I am most looking forward to trying something new and living independently when I go to University and being able to study History more in-depth. It’s a daunting but exciting opportunity for me”.

Jessica Yong who achieved 4 A* and 1 A said “I am speechless with my results – they are beyond what I expected to achieve.” Jess will be studying Medicine at Cambridge University and is thinking about specialising in cardiovascular health: “I am really excited to study anatomy as part of my course and I can’t wait to build new friendships with those who also have an interest in medicine.”

Our students left some final words of advice for upcoming 6th form students: It’s really important to have a good work ethic as well as being organised with your revision. When things start to become difficult, resilience and perseverance are really important. Enjoy your course and try not to stress. Ensure you have a close friendship group so you can support each other through difficult periods and revision.

Northern Education Trust and Dyke House Academy are incredibly proud of their students, who have shown dedication, resilience and focus over what has been a roller-coaster of a few years and to reach this point has been a real challenge. Each and every student should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Chief Executive, Rob Tarn said: “We are extremely pleased with the A level results this year, which overall show a continual improvement in outcomes for our students, ensuring they are well equipped to progress to the next stage of their lives. These young people have endured a tumultuous few years in their academic journey, and we must remember that they have never sat public examinations before, having been due to take their GCSEs in 2020, which were cancelled due to the pandemic. To achieve these results against this background is testaments to their hard work and commitment and we are immensely proud of them. I am very grateful to our dedicated staff for their relentless focus on ensuring these young people were not disadvantaged by the disruption caused by the pandemic, and I know they join me in wishing them every success for their future”
