  • Year 7s invited to apply for Dyke House’s Elite Development Squad Year 7s invited to apply for Dyke House’s Elite Development Squad

AN established sport scholarship programme at Northern Education Trust Dyke House Academy is on the lookout for new recruits.

The Hartlepool secondary school is seeking applications from Year 7 students who believe they may warrant a place on its Elite Development Squad (like last year’s intake did and are pictured).

Dyke House’s scheme, which was first launched in 2013, will then assess the applicants before determining whether they are awarded a place on the top tier (Elite) or second tier (Development).

Those interested in applying must note that Elite students will be those already performing at a high level in their chosen sport; like an academy footballer.

The Elite Development Squad is open to all sports, although only specialised coaching can be provided at Dyke House in certain areas.

PE teacher Joe Palmer, who is the new coordinator of the scheme for 2020-21, said: “I would like students to fulfil their potential in both a sporting and academic sense and at Dyke House we would like to help them achieve that.

“It would be fantastic to see them reach a career in sport, even if it is not directly as a performer when they leave, as a result of the opportunities they have had at Dyke House in order to enhance their life chances.”

Mr Palmer has spent the last five years teaching PE at Dyke House and has now added this role to his working day. He is looking to provide great chances for students, while also knowing the scholars will be provided with strength and conditioning sessions, training kits and an Elite tie.

Mr Palmer, who took last year’s Year 9 footballers to the last four of the Elite National Cup, said: “I am looking to run more outreaching trips depending on what happens with the coronavirus in future months.

“In the next two to three weeks we want to see applications for current Year 7s and then we will consider who to select for the Elite.

“I am hoping some can follow in the footsteps of some of our former talents such as professional footballers Harry Chapman, Cameron Painter and Vinnie Steels.

“And other top performers like golfers Jack Ainscough and Will Skipp. Even this year we have just seen Josh Bell sign for Harrogate and it would be lovely to see that trend continue.

“Already so far in the first five weeks at Dyke House since the September start we have seen numerous footballers and cricket students touted for potential Development Squad places and they possess a lot of ability.”

Students wishing to apply to be on the Elite Development Squad at Dyke House should complete an application form to be returned to Mr J Palmer.
